Here is a list of people, companies, events, and resources we feel are helpful to independent artists. We will continue to build this list as we discover more great things! If you have any recommendations, please let us know at info@step1theatreproject.org!

The Tank

The Tank is a non-profit NYC-based arts presenter that donates free performance space to independent artists accross several disciplines in exchange for a box office split. Each season they present a curated series called Flint & Tinder, which offers great incentives for artists such as free performance space, free rehearsal space, a guaranteed stipend per performance, among many other super helpful things. Things to keep in mind: free space goes quickly, as one can imagine, so it's always recommended to submit proposals as far in advance as possible. There are also various Fests aside from Flint & Tinder that accept open submissions (including Pride Fest, Dark Fest, and Lady Fest). This is an excellent option for artists who may not be able to afford space but are looking to develop their work in a safe place. Quite honestly, NYC artists need an organization like this in our city! Visit www.thetanknyc.org for more info.

Planet Connections Theatre Festivity

Planet Connections Theatre Festivity is a good option for artists who are looking to meet new artists and grow their network. Since all participating artists get to see each other's shows for free, it is an excellent opportunity to see other artistic styles, which means good opportunities for future collaborations. At the end of the season, every participating artist gets the opportunity to become nominated for awards for design, performance, directing, playwrighting, and overall production--which is a great addition to your company's resume! In addition to the perks of being part of the community, Planet Connections asks all artists to sponsor a charity--which means that you are not only adding your art to the festival, but your production is helping others in real time! Returning artists tend to come back for the community feel.
