Step1 Theatre Project is an NYC-based theatre company. Our mission is to present bold productions by underrepresented artists while providing accessible developmental opportunities to members of the local indie theatre community.

When we first started in 2016, we accepted submissions for productions from artists in our community and gathered together to read these pieces and curate our season. These (wine-fueled) readings were so much fun for the team, we decided to open them up to the community. Thus, our cold reading series R&D (aka Reading & Drinking) was born! These quarterly sessions are free of charge and offer a space for artists to get constructive feedback from an audience on their developing works.

After successful R&D sessions, we took things a step further by taking an R&D piece and producing a staged reading with light blocking and design elements with the intention of developing the piece further. This created an opportunity for us to start our own developmental pipeline! Our plan is to produce full Step1 productions of pieces that have been presented as staged readings and at past R&D sessions. R&D sessions are always free, and our shows and staged reading ticket prices are always low with additional discounts for students and seniors.

Step1 Theatre Project & Rutgers-NJIT Theatre Department Proudly Present:
Chasing the Ghost by Ashley Lauren Rogers

Kurt was a vlogger in the early days of YouTube, where he screamed about video games he hated. But he's left that behind him, finding a wife and keeping his character's anger in check. Until one night where he is visited by a shadow person... who won't stop tickling his feet.

Content Warning: This production includes scenes/imagery that invoke violence and/or intimacy. There is also discussion of sexual assault, doxxing, suicide, and abuse. The characters involved in these scenes are Kurt, Patty, and Spectre.

Covid-19 Safety Protocol: Masks are required indoors including the theater.

November 10, 11, 12, 13 @ 7:30 PM EST
November 14 @ 2:30 PM EST

Jim Wise Theater, Kupfrian Hall, NJIT in Newark, NJ

We're looking forward to announcing our next staged reading, a play presented at one of 2019's R&D sessions. We're hoping to present this piece live in compliance with vendor safety policies. Stay tuned for updates!

Covid-19 may have changed our 2020-21 plans, but we are coming back next season with 4 new R&D sessions! All plays read out loud at R&D have an opportunity to move on to the next stage of development, staged readings. Do you have a script you haven't touched in a while, or something new in the works that you'd like to start developing? Submit your script below! We accept short plays, one acts, full lengths, and musicals.
