STEP1 THEATRE PROJECT
Step1 Theatre Project is an NYC-based theatre company. Our mission is to present bold productions by underrepresented artists while providing accessible developmental opportunities to members of the local indie theatre community.
When we first started in 2016, we accepted submissions for productions from artists in our community and gathered together to read these pieces and curate our season. These (wine-fueled) readings were so much fun for the team, we decided to open them up to the community. Thus, our cold reading series R&D (aka Reading & Drinking) was born! These quarterly sessions are free of charge and offer a space for artists to get constructive feedback from an audience on their developing works.
After successful R&D sessions, we took things a step further by taking an R&D piece and producing a staged reading with light blocking and design elements with the intention of developing the piece further. This created an opportunity for us to start our own developmental pipeline! Our plan is to produce full Step1 productions of pieces that have been presented as staged readings and at past R&D sessions. R&D sessions are always free, and our shows and staged reading ticket prices are always low with additional discounts for students and seniors.

OUR 2020 SEASON
MAHOGANY BROWN AND THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING KID BY GINA FEMIA
Step1's annual production was presented at the 2020 Frigid NY Festival, a revival of our 2019 production which was presented at The Tank. Visit the link below to learn more about this year's show, cast, and crew!
ANNUAL STAGED READING
We're looking forward to announcing our next staged reading, a play presented at one of 2019's R&D sessions. We're hoping to present this piece live and are standing by for updates on when it will be safe to gather together again.
QUARTERLY R&D SESSIONS
WINTER R&D: KISS IN THE DREAMHOUSE BY ASHLEY ROGERS
Kiss in the Dream House is the story of young love, intersectional transgender issues, and Death Metal. A young interracial couple, who thought they had overcome everything, are faced with a number of challenges that could tear them apart before their Vietnamese engagement ceremony.
SPRING, SUMMER, FALL R&D:
Covid-19 may have changed plans of assembling together for our cold reading sessions, but the Step1 team is working together no how to bring our quarterly readings to the community in a way that is remote, productive, and fun. We're always accepting submissions, so if you're a writer interested in presenting a piece at an R&D live session, submit your work to us at firstname.lastname@example.org!
